Sharing with a Mac. Surprisingly, connecting a Mac to a Windows 7, 8, or 10 PC is quite similar. The Mac can’t join your homegroup, no way no how, but it can get into the Public folder of a specific PC. Here’s how: In the Mac OS X Finder, choose Go, Connect to Server. The Mac responds with the Connect to Server dialog box, shown here. Store photos and docs online. Access them from any PC, Mac or phone. Create and work together on Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents.

There are two basic ways that you, as an admin, can deploy the OneDrive sync app to Mac users in your organization:
- Have users install and set up the OneDrive sync app themselves by following the instructions in Sync files with OneDrive on Mac OS X. To install the OneDrive sync app for Mac, a user has to be administrator on the Mac or know an administrator account name and password.
- Download the installer package file to your local network, and then use your software distribution tools to deploy the app to your users. By using a software distribution tool, you have more control over the deployment, including which users get the sync app and when. The OneDrive sync app for Mac uses the Apple Installer technology for installation. This means you can use the software distribution tools that you normally use to deploy software to Mac users. You can use Microsoft Intune. Other common tools are Jamf Pro, Munki, and AutoPkg. You can also use Apple Remote Desktop and AppleScript.

Summary
After a successful preview program, we are happy to report that the first release of the OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client is now available for deployment.
Our top priorities for this release have been improved reliability and performance as well as providing essential user capabilities such as selective sync, support for large files up to 10Gb in size and removing the 20,000 file sync limit. The OneDrive for Business Next Generation Sync Client is available for Windows 7, 8, and 10 (8.1 support will be added in the first quarter of 2016) and Mac OS X 10.9 and above. IT administrators can deploy the client with configurable options such as the ability to block sync for the OneDrive consumer service as well as set the default sync folder location. Updates to the new sync client will occur independently of Office and Windows updates.
Is this first release of the Next Generation Sync Client the right option for my organization?
There are some aspects of this first release that you should be aware of. We are shipping with some notable gaps that you should review before determining whether this new client is currently appropriate to deploy to your organization.
Windows 8.1 support: this release is currently not supported on Windows 8.1, this support will be added in the first quarter of 2016.
SharePoint Document Library sync: this capability will be added in future releases; we will communicate timelines for this support in the first quarter of 2016. The Next Generation Sync Client will work side by side with the existing sync client (groove.exe) for customers who require sync for both OneDrive for Business and SharePoint document libraries.
Office integration limitations: If a user opens an Office document from their locally synced folder in Windows Explorer then the Office application is not aware that the file is a cloud OneDrive for Business file. As a result, the following limitations apply:
- The user can’t participate in a co-authoring session on the document.
- The Most Recently Used (MRU) list is updated with the local path to the document, not the cloud location. So if the user also opens the document from the browser then they will have two listings in their MRU with the same filename:
- Sharing via OneDrive for Business from the backstage of the Office app is not available:
- Cloud (Modern) attachments are not available in Outlook 2016 because it thinks that the attachment is a locally stored file versus a OneDrive for Business cloud file:
Note that all the above limitations will be resolved (for Windows) in the second quarter of 2016. In the meantime, the issues above can be avoided by educating users to be consistent with how they open files. https://keennote.weebly.com/thunderbird-for-mac-high-sierra.html. If they want benefits such as co-authoring support and in-app sharing options then they need to open them through either:
- The File-Open experience inside the Office app:
- Or, the browser:
Limitations in transitioning from the existing sync client: if your organization is currently using the existing sync client there is currently no automated, in-place takeover or migration of content to the Next Generation Sync Client. This will be added in the first quarter of 2016. For full details go here.
